Virginia City, Nevada is the location of the Comstock Lode which yielded $400,000,000 in gold and silver between 1859 and 1880. Gold Hill was about a mile south of Virginia City. The author's father, Isaac L. Requa, was a mill superintendent in this area for many years in the 1860s and 1870s.
